Mom Lawyer Guide To: Communicating While on Travel

Last year, I traveled for work more than I ever had (or anyone who wants her kids to still recognize her should)! I’m not exaggerating, either. I spent over 100 nights in a hotel, and while this means upgraded loyalty status (free breakfast - score!), it came at a toll being away from my two kids. But being in a different time zone doesn’t mean total incommunicado. For early morning east coast meetings, I sent my west coast family videos before starting a marathon day. Text messages, video snippets, and even goodnight songs can all be prerecorded and sent. My kids had fun responding to my messages, too. Apps like Marco Polo and FaceTime were invaluable to stay connected. Bonus: when overseas and using a WiFi connection, this communication was free! While it’s not the same as being home, singing my kids songs to them at bedtime remotely maintained a sense of normalcy and routine, which helped not only them - but also me too.
